Ray Wilkins - Talk Sport
Worth a listen.

Are Premier League clubs not giving young English talent a fair chance?

Mentions Oxford and how he is not in our first team. Goes onto say Oxford showed on his debut against Arsenal that he was more than ready at just 16. Yet he is nowhere near our first team now?

Anyone else used to have one of those `BUTCH WILKINS CAPTAIN' plastic footballs from the 70's?? Actually were not a bad ball ....

Re: Ray Wilkins - Talk Sport
I make him bang on. We aren't going to get Europe and we won't get relegated, yet we would rather waste 8m on a 33 year old than blood a talent that will inevitably play his best years at a bigger club.

I scored a bicycle kick at football on Wednesday night, should I now play for West Ham?

One or two good games doesn't make someone ready and unfortunately if their consistency and attitude aren't quite right then managers will not take the risk on young players anymore as the money stakes are too high.

THAT is the real issue, until football addresses that then this will continue to happen.

deal, they had Westley on there that morning who was talking about the lack of opportunity for some of our youngsters

I went off Wilkins when he abused that ball boy

verbally, that is

Most managers aren't willing to give a youngster an extended run in the team, Slaven included.

A real shame, but we're not going to see Oxford given a run in front of an established CB.

I'd put him in - but that might be why I work for the NHS and not a football club.

You could say he should be in on the basis of the Arsenal game, but out on the basis of Everton away.

He's young. There's time.

As good as Oxford was against Arsenal, it's seems largely forgotten he was subbed at half time after being pretty crap against Leicester in the next game.

He wasn't ready to be a regular. It's easy for someone like Wilkins to sit there and criticise, but the reality is that it ain't his neck on the line if the team doesn't perform and the youngster is a weak link. i agree Oxford should probably have got more chances in the last 12 months, but there are many more clubs guilty of not giving young players a chance than us. Truth be told, the premier league these days isn't the ideal place to blood youngsters, what with so much on the line. Unless they are an exceptional talent that makes themself undroppable, it's hard to get a foot in the door.

Cup would have been ideal for Oxford and some of the other this year but thanks to us blowing it in the Europa and getting absolute stinker draws in both the domestics, that chance was taken away.
